Why I Love Simple, Timeless Cake Smashes
As a baby photographer based in Charlottesville, Virginia, I’ve had the joy of capturing so many little ones during one of the sweetest and most meaningful milestones of their first year—the cake smash. Watching a baby experience their very first birthday cake is nothing short of magical. From hesitant pokes to frosting-covered giggles, every moment is filled with wonder, and every baby reacts in their own unique way.
When it comes to cake smash photography, my style is simple, timeless, and baby-focused. I intentionally keep the setup clean and neutral so the spotlight stays on your baby and their blooming personality. Each session typically begins with a few sweet portraits of your baby before the cake comes out. These are perfect for capturing their adorable expressions, emerging personality, and the little details you never want to forget. Then comes the big moment—the cake! Some babies dive right in, laughing and smashing with both hands. Others are more tentative, gently exploring the textures and tastes. No matter how your little one approaches it, the results are always meaningful and fun, a cherished visual story of this once-in-a-lifetime milestone.
And when the cake is thoroughly enjoyed, and your baby is a little sticky and happy, we may finish with a few adorable shots of them cleaning up in a warm, baby-sized tub. These images are often favorites—relaxed, natural, and oh-so-cute.
For families who want to keep things short and sweet, I also offer a mini session option: just a few beautiful photos of your baby smashing a cake while seated in a vintage white high chair, set against a warm and neutral backdrop. It’s simple, charming, and perfect for commemorating the occasion without a full session.
