Photographing "geriatric" newborns

Your little one is a month old and you've started to regret that you didn't book a newborn session. Maybe you were too busy during pregnancy or too anxious (as I was with my first) to plan a session...or maybe you didn't think these photos would be something you would value--until now. So have you missed your chance?

Well, maybe not...

I have photographed "geriatric" newborns (babies 4-13 weeks) with some success in the newborn studio style. Yes, they can be harder to wrap (they can be very strong!) and they don't tend to sleep as much or as long. On the other hand, their eyes are getting brighter and they can begin to focus in open-eyed shots. And they still do tend to take several naps throughout the day. In fact, for my own daughter, I took an upright, wrapped "newborn" photo at 12 weeks and one week later was taking 3-month milestone photos of her (I'll post the photos below for comparison!).

So I generally will not turn a client away from a newborn studio session because their baby is older than three weeks. I do caution them that we will probably focus more on getting wrapped shots and to expect more awake photos. But at the end of the day, if you keep an open mind about what we can achieve, I feel confident that we can get beautiful shots of your precious new baby, which you will cherish.

And if your baby is going on three months, consider contacting me for a 3 or 4-month milestone session. Because it is never a bad time to capture your sweet baby in photographic art. I didn't get professional photos of my first gorgeous baby until she was 4 months old. But I love those photos just as much as the newborn photos of her little siblings.
